How to properly weld canopies on the gate. How to properly weld the hinges to the gate - step by step instructions and recommendations. Necessary tools for work

A gate is an integral part of any building, and it performs not only a protective but also a decorative function. When installing them, the problem of correct welding of all fastening elements stands apart, because the appearance of errors in the work and the incorrect creation of a weld seam greatly impair their reliability, and also reduce the service life. How to weld the hinges to the gate correctly? This article will be able to answer most of your questions.

Garage hinges mainly differ in shape and material of manufacture. The appearance and service life of these products strongly depend on these parameters. Today, the choice is huge, ranging from simple and ending with forged hinges. In order to determine which ones will be needed in your particular case, let's look at the most popular types.

  1. Cylindrical hinges are welded to posts and sashes. Today they are the most common type. Consist of two parts. The lower one has a pin on which the second half with a hole is put on.
  2. Reinforced cylinders with bearings. They differ from the first type of fastening by the presence of additional plates and bearings. Maximum load increased to 600 kg.
  3. Through-type hinges are installed inside the racks, fastened with nuts and bolts. Used if the client wishes to hide the hinges inside the supports. They are extremely rare. Their installation requires some skill. It is quite difficult for an unprofessional welder to install them.
  4. Three-piece hinges. They do not differ much from the previous types. Most often used as additional protection against vandals .

General welding rules

Before carrying out work, you need to prepare the workplace and tools. To avoid injury when welding, you must adhere to safety rules and avoid the presence of flammable materials in the working area.

For work we need the following tools:

  • welding machine and electrodes with a diameter of 3 mm;
  • roulette;
  • building or laser level;
  • a hammer;
  • protective equipment: mask and gloves;
  • bulgarian;
  • grease, primer, paint and brushes.

Also, for work, we need the loops themselves. Make sure that they are of proper quality, because even if all recommendations are followed, low-quality parts will not last long.

Beginning of work

Before starting welding, you need to place the leaves of the future gate in the garage opening. This is done in order to achieve the correct position of the flaps and determine the scope of work. At this stage, be patient and, if possible, an assistant. Only after you have achieved the even position of the flaps, you can proceed to the welding itself. The peculiarity is that it is extremely rare to carry out this type of work in a horizontal position. And making a vertical weld can be difficult even for experienced craftsmen. Given this fact, welding should be carried out with special care, describing circular movements and, as it were, lifting the metal.

At first glance, this type of work seems difficult and requires special skills. However, it is quite possible to fulfill it, following the rules and possessing a certain skill. The most important thing is to take your time while doing the work and to carry out the actions according to the plan.

  1. From the top and bottom of the canvas, you need to measure approximately 20-25 cm and mark with a pencil or chalk. In order for the hinges not to sinter, they need to be lubricated, for example, with grease, or put small pieces of wood the size of a match. This trick will help to avoid jamming during work and simplify the process in general.
  2. We weld the hinges to the gate. On initial stage hinges should not be completely welded. You should only lightly tack them with welding. It is important to remember that the bottom half of the part is welded first. For those who use the welding machine for the first time, remember that the loop is welded from the bottom to the top, and the movement of the electrode should be smooth and without breaks.
  3. After the first seam is completed, the gate needs to be opened and checked using a building or laser level how well it opens and closes. You can finish the work if the result suits you. An ideally installed structure should open without effort or additional noise.
  4. Repeat all the indicated manipulations for the rest of the details.

The places where the welding was done must be carefully sanded using a grinder. The final stage is priming and painting the gate in the chosen color.

What not to do when welding

Any type of construction or installation work is fraught with various kinds of errors and shortcomings. All of them lead to the fact that the result may not suit you and the work will need to be redone or started anew. In order for the welding work to go without problems, you need to adhere to simple rules.

  • Do not do the work "by eye", even if you are confident in your own eyes. Measuring instruments are much more accurate than the human eye.
  • Do not use faulty equipment. This is not only ineffective, but also unsafe for a number of reasons.
  • Do not start welding before the paint is completely dry, otherwise the weld will look different from what you expect.
  • Do not use protective clothing with traces of flammable materials (oil, gasoline, etc.) in order to avoid a fire, and also keep the workspace free of flammable objects and materials.
  • Welding of vessels and containers under pressure is prohibited. Violation of their integrity can lead to an explosion and cause significant damage to health.

We hope that our article helped you figure out how to weld the hinges on the gate. This technology has been in use for decades and has proven itself well. If you follow all the recommendations, you will see that the installation of garage doors, although it is a very multifaceted process, is within the power of not only experienced welders, but also beginners.

Or a gate? Rarely does anyone think about this question, because products of this type are purchased completely ready for installation, which, moreover, is trusted by the masters of the manufacturer. However, sometimes you still need to know the welding technique in order to weld loops - regular (round) or teardrop-shaped - according to all the rules.

What is the difference between loops?

The drop-shaped canopies seem to be elongated - there is vertical thinning. If you look at such a loop from above, its shape will resemble a drop. It is easier to handle such awnings - no additional work is needed, which consists in welding metal plates to ordinary hinges - one is attached to the top of the mechanism, the other to the bottom. Otherwise, there is no difference between the two types of awnings.

It is easier to weld the hinges to the wicket due to the low weight of the structure.

Welding rules

To work, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • building level, better laser;
  • roulette;
  • welding machine with electrodes with a diameter of 3 mm and protective equipment;
  • overalls - clean without oil and other stains from flammable liquids;
  • bulgarian;
  • a hammer;
  • grease (grease is suitable);
  • paint brush or roller;
  • paint.

The welding process is usually carried out in the vertical position of the sash. If there is a need to reinforce an existing weld, the structures must be removed from the hinges. You cannot cook without removing the gate.

Photo according to the rules for welding garage hinges

Let's say the corner on the left is the garage door frame, and the profile on the right is the sash.

We attach our loop to the frame and scald on both sides.

To connect the frame to the sash, upper part weld the hinges from below and from above using a sheet of metal. The fastening reliability is low due to the fact that metal often leads during welding.

A more reliable way is to weld the loops through the flags. The lower part of the flag is welded to the frame on both sides.

To connect, weld the upper part of the flag to the sash.

We put a sheet of metal on top (on the flag) so that it "goes" onto the frame. Thus, it is much more convenient, much easier and much more practical to cook hinges on garage doors.

Welding technology

  1. Make the markup. Using a tape measure and pencil or chalk, mark the places where the loops will be placed. It is recommended to step back from above and below by about a quarter of a meter. In production, after certain calculations that help during operation to avoid skewing the door leaf (if the hinges are welded too close to the edges, the upper part will pull the block forward and down too much due to the heavy weight).
  2. Lubricate the hinges with grease to avoid sintering them, then grab them in several places: first the lower half, then put the upper half on it and check if you are moving in the right direction. Now open the loop and weld on the top of it - just a little to just hold. Next, you need to check with an assistant how the gate behaves, whether it is warped.
  3. If everything is fine, weld it over. Drop-shaped loops - along the entire thinning, simple - along the long side of the additionally attached plate.
  4. Check how the canvases are closed. If everything is fine, simple loops are welded completely - along the perimeter of the additional plate.

Do not forget to set the technological distance between the sashes and the frame.

Clean the welding spots with a grinder, then completely prime the door leaf and frame. Once the primer is dry, paint with the selected paint.

Always mark up, do not cook by eye. Check if the equipment is working properly before operation. Only by observing the rules can you get a high-quality weld and a normally working metal structure.

Gate hinges are a metal device, thanks to which the gate is fixed on the posts. And, accordingly, the quality and reliability of the functioning of the entire structure, as well as its service life, directly depends on them.

Features:

Speaking about the design of the gate, we must not forget even about the little things, especially about such an important component as the hinges. One of the main properties of the hinges is their ability to rotate even with the heaviest sash, while not forcing the owner to make great efforts, protecting the gate from jamming and similar problem situations. Therefore, the selection and process of welding hinges requires special attention.

So, loops can be characterized as:

  1. A power element, the main task of which is to take over the entire weight of the sashes. On this basis, the hinges must have sufficient strength;
  2. The item to be parsed. When the structure is completely assembled, it is worth making sure that when the gate is closed, the hinges will not be removed and the burglars will not be able to disassemble them.

Features of operation and operation of loops:

  1. Mandatory availability of special holes for lubrication. The mobility of the parts depends on proper care, so they need to be lubricated regularly, even in the winter season;
  2. The opening radius of the gate directly depends on the hinges. Therefore, they must be welded accurately and correctly. Before welding these elements, you need to attach them to different sites, draw up a kind of drawing and make sure that the flaps open without problems;
  3. You need to be especially careful about the position of the hinges if they are supposed to be fixed inside the sash. It is very important here that it opens well and does not jam.

Varieties

According to the GOST standard, hinges are divided into:

  1. Cylindrical, with a support bearing (or with an eccentric);
  2. Cylindrical, with a reinforced structure;
  3. Through;
  4. Hidden;
  5. Three-section consignment notes.

Cylindrical ones are equipped with a ball, or, in other words, a bearing. They are well suited for the installation of lightweight standardized doors. But it is worth remembering that the load on all loops should be no more than 400 kg. This is the maximum weight you can hold. It needs to be clarified at the time of purchase, since it is different for each type of loops. Therefore, it is essential to know this indicator.

They are standard both in form and in appearance and looks like a two-piece cylinder. Accordingly, a pin is located on one part, which is inserted into the second part. However, hinges with support bearings are also equipped with a ball. This ball is located in the second part where the pin is inserted.

The ball provides smoother operation under heavy load. In addition, there is often a special hole on the opposite side from the bearing, which is closed with a plug. If necessary, remove it and lubricate the structure. Also, sometimes there are models where the bearing is located in the middle and the two parts seem to slide on the ball, providing easy opening and closing of the flaps. The downside is the difficulty in lubricating, since you have to slightly raise the sash.

Reinforced cylindrical (with wings) hinges withstand heavy loads, up to 600 kg. They can be distinguished from ordinary cylindrical ones by their appearance and the presence of additional parts (mounting plates). This allows the frame, sash and gates to accept the weight of the entire structure evenly. They are fastened by welding or screwed on with self-tapping screws and provide opening in two directions.

They are made of more durable metal and therefore are able to withstand heavy loads. In addition, the walls with the core are thicker than usual, therefore their bearing capacity is increased. Bearings for such models are always marked.

Through (hinged) fasteners are suitable if it is not possible to provide welding or screw fasteners. To attach them, you will have to drill the gate support column and use screws or nuts. However, the hinges are characterized by a small mass of the maximum supported weight, reaching only 200 kg. They are right-handed and left-handed. They can be equipped with awnings.

Through hinges have a rod that goes through.The simplest designs are subdivided into three main elements: a pin to connect the two halves, and two hinges. In more complex versions, there may be many more elements. To protect the pin from being pulled out from below, install (weld or screw on) a plug. If it is not there, then a special stopper is welded onto the pin on top.

Overhead three-section (magnetic) fasteners are advisable if the sash is very heavy.

They are suitable for fences and differ in:

  1. High wear resistance and reliability;
  2. Does not allow the canvas to sag, since they take on almost the entire load;
  3. Open and close easily and without noise;
  4. The most tamper-proof of all types.

They can be confused with through, but they are cylindrical. There are two pins in the middle that look in different directions from each other. Empty bearings are attached to them on both sides and welded.

These hinges have literally passed the test of time, since this design was first created many hundreds of years ago. These days, they are attracting attention due to their unusual and cute designs. They come in any shape, they are performed in the form of different shapes. They are best combined with doors made of wood and metal.

Hidden hinges are not visible when the gate is closed. They are located in the sash frame and are welded from the inside to the frame and to the transverse side of the posts. They are extremely difficult to find and even more difficult to hack.

Boom hinges are hinged and semi-hinged and are suitable for fairly heavy and large gates.

They may be:

  1. Regular;
  2. Curly;
  3. Removable.

The adjustable hinges make it easy to change the sash height. They are very convenient if the support legs are to be offset. The maximum load on them reaches 200 kg.

Shape differences:

  1. Cylindrical.Loop fixation is very tight on any gate. They have a rounded shape and easily wrap around without touching anything;
  2. Square.The shape is quite specific, therefore, a small distance from the frame is required for installation. They are fixed more reliably, are hardly noticeable on the canvas, have an attractive appearance;
  3. Hexagonal. They look like square models. They are fixed approximately between cylindrical and square, that is, they are universal;
  4. Drop-shaped.Suitable for wooden and metal gate... They are very robust and highly durable. And, among other things, they are quite attractive in appearance.

How to choose?

Wickets and gates can be made of wood, sheet steel, corrugated board or other finishing panels. The installation of hinges is also different. Welded hinges are characteristic of metal structures; they are also fixed with bolts and self-tapping screws (for metal). Self-tapping screws are characteristic of wood gates.

Based on this, when choosing, it is necessary to focus on the canvas from which the gate is made, its dimensions and weight. For example, if the fasteners are designed for a weight of 200 kg, and the canvas is large and heavy, then they will quickly break. Therefore, sometimes it is necessary to install special reinforced hinges for heavy gates.

The location of the loops is also important. The most common are hidden and internal.

The hinges should perform the following functions:

  1. Ensuring silent opening;
  2. Holding the canvas - in no case should it sag;
  3. The hinges should be easy to turn;
  4. Long service life;
  5. Burglary resistance;
  6. Gate opening width.

The best option is devices equipped with a ball and a support bearing. This model has many qualities and is durable. Adjustable models are also very good as they are very comfortable. And finally, the choice of hinges may depend solely on the aesthetic side of the part. For example, the design of semi-antique hinges, inlaid with carvings or any element of forging.

Sometimes questions may arise about the difference between the hinges for the gate and for the wicket. In fact, they do not differ from each other, because they are selected for the wicket according to the same criteria and must perform the same functions as the gate.

How to install?

Based on the size, weight of the doors and the design of the hinges themselves, the door leaf can be hung on two, three, or even four hinges.

Installation of hinges is carried out in two main ways:

  1. Bolts or screws. It is used for fastening small-sized structures with low weight;
  2. Welding. It is used for large, massive gates (for example, three-meter fences).

For those who themselves installed interior doors at home, attaching the hinges with self-tapping screws with their own hands will be quite simple. After all, both of these methods are similar. The hinges are attached to the front sash area and the support post. In this case, they become a kind of decorative element for the entire structure and are suitable for both wood and metal.

How to weld correctly?

Hinges that have an open location are best welded one opposite the other. This is done for the purpose of resistance to hacking. If the hinges are pry on from below, they will still be impossible to remove.

Necessary equipment and parts:

  1. Selected hinges;
  2. Mounting plates;
  3. Grinder with electrodes;
  4. A hammer;
  5. Personal protective equipment: protective gloves, mask and clothing.

Sequencing:

  • We take the structure and place it on a flat surface. We outline the places where the fasteners will be located;
  • We lubricate the hinges themselves with grease;
  • We take the sash and put it on a plumb line in a vertical position;
  • Using spot welding, we grab two parts of the loop;

  • We check the location of the hinge axes;
  • We grab the top loop;
  • We check the presence of gaps and cracks, the quality of the shutter movement;
  • We weld on everything completely;
  • We clean the cooking place using a grinder and paint it with paint.

During welding, it is necessary to control the passage of current so that a tack does not form in the loops. The process itself is best done crosswise to compensate for welded deformations.

Useful Tips when welding loops:

  • For straight loops, the welding position is better to choose horizontal;
  • Before starting work, we take a substrate and put it under the sash, more precisely, under its lower area. The backing should be about ½ the size of the loop. The upper area of \u200b\u200bthe sash must be held from the transverse edge by hand;
  • To evenly distribute the mass on the hinges, additional mounting metal plates can be welded to them;
  • A 5 mm outer release is made to the rounded posts. To the pillars of a rectangular shape, they are fixed at the same level with the transverse edge of the support;
  • It is more expedient to weld the hinges twice from all sides in turn with small tacks;

  • We attach a wooden block to the hinges. Using it, you can align them, and only then weld;
  • Before internal welding, you need to check how smoothly the flaps run. If the movements are similar to jerks, then we make a few more sticks outside;
  • Before you finally weld the hinges, you need to close the flaps and put a substrate under them. Thus, the blade will not sag and the welding will be correct;
  • The weld seam goes from bottom to top;
  • Until the welding seams have completely cooled down, the gate must not be opened;
  • Hidden mounts must be installed by a professional.

The ease of opening and closing a metal door, the smoothness of its movement without jerking and squeaking, the ability to perform security functions largely depends on how correctly the door hinges were installed. So that they do not become a "weak link" of the entire structure and do not fail at a crucial moment, you should properly weld the hinges on the metal door.

Varieties of loops

It is important to choose the right fasteners, taking into account the weight of the door and its dimensions. For heavy metal doors in modern industry the following types of hinges are produced:

  1. Cylindrical. The most popular, because they make it possible to open the gate to the maximum angle. Among the disadvantages is the difficulty with fixing to a flat surface.
  2. Drop-shaped. They are a type of cylindrical hinge.
  3. Hexagonal.
  4. Square. They are rarely used.
In this article, you will learn how to weld the hinges correctly.

Regardless of the shape of the section, the door hinge is a part consisting of at least two elements. In the simplest hinges, the connection of these elements is carried out using a pin and a mating groove. Their main advantage is low cost and ease of further maintenance (lubrication). At the same time, simple hinges fail faster.

In more complex structures, at the end of the pin there is a movably fixed ball (ball loops), the function of which is to replace sliding friction with rolling friction, which, as you know, is much less. Due to this, it is easier to open and close the sashes, and the hinges themselves will last longer.

There are also hinges equipped with ball bearings, but they are not recommended for heavy doors, since the complex mechanism quickly becomes unusable. For massive wickets and gate leaves, hinges are produced, additionally reinforced with plates. Due to the plates, the weight of the door is more evenly distributed on them, which makes it possible to increase its service life.

Reinforced ball bearings are considered the best option for heavy metal doors, garage doors and gates. They compare favorably with their cheaper counterparts in their long service life, ability to withstand significant weight loads and ease of installation.

In this video, you will learn how to properly weld the hinges:

For heavy metal doors, the welded method is recognized as the best. It allows you to fix the hinges as securely as possible, eliminate backlash and gradual loosening of the connections.

Alphabet truths

The process of installing hinges can be seen on the example of a metal wicket. So that it regularly performs its main functions when welding the hinges a number of conditions must be met:

  1. Provide a gap between the support post and the wicket frame, which should be 3-5 mm.
  2. Provide a gap of several millimeters between the hinge and the wicket frame by welding metal plates to the hinge required thickness... In total, for each loop you need two plastic plates, the length of each of them is 2 mm less than the length of half.
  3. The optimal distance from the edge of the wicket to the hinge is 15-20 cm. If you need a middle hinge, then it is located exactly in the middle between the outer hinges.

First, the lower part of the fastener (with a pin) is welded to the post, then the upper part (with a groove) is welded to the sash.

A properly assembled structure should have the following parts:

  • the loop;
  • platy; gate frame;
  • support post;
  • lower part (with pin);
  • upper part (with a groove).

This design consists of several elements.

All loops must be coaxial, that is, their centers must be on the same straight line. The alignment requirement is critical. It depends on its observance how evenly the weight of the gate will be distributed to the fastenings and, accordingly, how long they will last.

For work, the master will need:

  • welding machine;
  • metal plate for making platics;
  • bulgarian;
  • a hammer;
  • plumb line;
  • hinge oil;
  • protective equipment - mask, gloves, overalls.

At the preparatory stage, you should mark out the frame of the wicket and the sash, determining the places where the hinges will be welded. Clean them from dust, dirt, rust. To do this, you can use a wire brush and solvents. Further, a similar treatment of the hinge surface is performed, and grease is applied to their inner part.

The traditional welding method involves the installation of platics at this stage, for which it is recommended:

  1. Take 2 identical plates of the required thickness and length. Place them so that there is a gap of 2-3 mm between them.
  2. Lay the bottom of the loop on them.
  3. Weld the loop to one of the plates (in this case, to the right).
  4. Do the same for the top of the hinge and weld it to the left plate.
  5. Then it is necessary to set the sashes in the working position and fix them.
  6. Plates with the lower part of each hinge are point-welded to the post, then the upper hinge elements are inserted into the lower parts and point-welded to the sash. After checking the alignment of the hinges and the operation of the wicket, the final welding is performed along the contour of the plates.

For an inexperienced craftsman, vertical cooking, which must be performed on an already installed pole, can be too difficult a task. In addition, it is almost impossible to do the work alone: \u200b\u200byou need an assistant.

The easiest way

If you have to rely only on your own strength, it will be easier to cook the hinges, laying both the support and the frame on a horizontal surface. The support post and the frame of the wicket are laid so that their surfaces are in the same plane.

There is a small gap of 2-3 mm between the frame and the post. The hinge will be installed on the support post, with a slight offset of several millimeters from the edge facing the wicket frame. On the support, places for installing the hinges are pre-marked and cleaned.

Further actions are performed in several stages:

  1. A bent electrode is placed under the loop, and it is placed in the selected location. If the door is subsequently sheathed with clapboard or corrugated board, you should step back even further from the edge of the support, otherwise the sash, the thickness of which will increase, will abut against the hinge when opening.
  2. The free end of the hinge is point-welded to the support. The connection must be strong and maintain some movement, allowing for adjustment.
  3. The bent electrode is removed and the second loop is similarly fixed on the support.
  4. Coaxiality is checked in two planes. To do this, you need to use a metal corner, attaching it first to the side of both hinges, and then from above. If necessary, a possible discrepancy is eliminated with a few blows of the hammer.
  5. From the side of the wicket frame, metal plates (platycs) are applied close to the hinges, the length of which is 2 mm less than the length of half of the hinge. They are point-welded to the hinges and to the door leaf.
  6. At the last stage, the work of the structure is checked and the final welding is performed around the perimeter of the plate. The lower parts of the hinges are welded to the frame, for which you can also use metal plates, placing them on the other side of the hinges.

Welding without plastics

With a low weight of the wicket, you can do without platics. Welding technology will be slightly changed:

  1. The support and frame of the wicket are laid horizontally so that their surfaces are in the same plane. A gap of 3-5 mm is left between them.
  2. From the top edge of the frame, 20 cm is measured and a loop is placed in the gap. To raise it slightly, you can use two matches, placing them perpendicular to the gap and installing a hinge on them.
  3. The loop is fixed by spot welding: the lower element with a pin is welded to the support, the upper element with a groove is welded to the frame.
  4. To check how well the hinges work, it is not at all necessary to raise the sash: it is much easier to turn the support. If everything is normal, final welding is performed along the entire length of the fixture.<./li>

These methods are suitable for installing new gates, doors or wickets. If it is necessary, for example, to replace old hinges on already installed doors, experienced craftsmen suggest acting as follows:

  1. Fix the scarves on the loop.
  2. Laying the sash horizontally, weld the upper part of the hinge.
  3. Place the sash in the opening and fix it.
  4. Insert the bottom of the hinge into the top. Mark on the support the place where the bottom plate should be.
  5. Weld the lower part to the support.

After welding the door hinges, the seams are cleaned, primed and painted over. Further care of the hinges is reduced to their regular lubrication, which will prevent rust and reduce friction.

Lubrication should be carried out only in the warm season, otherwise the hinges may freeze. Before applying grease, it is recommended to remove the door from the hinge, remove the remnants of the previous composition, dirt, rust from the pin, and clean the groove.

In order for the efforts on how to weld the hinges to the door to be successful, you should be careful when buying garage hinges. Be sure to make sure that:

  • their size and length correspond to the weight and dimensions of the valves;
  • the pin pivots freely in the hole;
  • there is a small gap of 0.1 mm between it and the inner surface of the groove;
  • there are no damages on the loop: dents, rust, shells.

The choice of the material from which the loop is made is equally important, since different types of steel are cooked in different ways. The easiest way is to weld fasteners cast from black steel or low alloy alloy. For them, you can use conventional electric welding.

If you purchase hinges made of stainless steel or alloy materials, you should be prepared for the need for carbon dioxide or argon welding. The only advantage of stainless steel is that the hinge will not rust. But since the coefficient of friction in a hinge made of this material is much higher than in a hinge made of black steel, it will have to be lubricated and cleaned more often.

To avoid problems when welding hinges and in the future, it is better to adhere to the following recommendations:

  1. It is undesirable to buy cheap hinges made of ordinary raw steel, since their service life is only 2-3 years. During this time, the hinge wears out so much that the gate leaves begin to sag.
  2. It is better to figure out in advance on which side of the gate the hinges will be welded, given that the best option for opening the doors is on the street, and think over the whole cooking process to the smallest detail.
  3. It should not be forgotten that the main function of the gate is security. It is undesirable to install from the street side, as they can be easily cut off. If you can't do without it, it is recommended that you order hinges made from forged steel that no cutter can handle.
  4. Make sure that the gate leaf cannot be removed when closed. Sometimes, in order to avoid such actions on the part of intruders, experienced craftsmen put one of the loops on each of the doors “upside down”. However, then the sashes will not be possible to remove in order to carry out repairs.
  5. If for the first time dealing with welding machine, you should learn to handle it in advance. Only an absolutely straight weld seam will give a reliable and strong connection. It will be difficult to redo a completely completed work.

These simple tips help a novice master, and installed doors will not cause him any further problems.

There are support loops, through which the canvas is hung on the frame base. At the same time, only competently performed welding operations make it possible to produce a high-quality hinge of the door leaf and ensure the safety of their operation. In this article, we'll look at how to weld hinges on a garage door.

Types of gate loops

The shape of the gate hinges can be of various designs. In the practice of garage construction, hinges of various shapes are most often used:

  • cylindrical;
  • square;
  • hex.

The cylindrical hinges, despite their not quite familiar appearance, are welded to the base much easier than any others. That is why we will choose them as the subject of consideration in our article. For the convenience of working with such loops, metal "ears" are first welded to them, the size and shape of which are selected based on the dimensions and total weight gate, as well as taking into account their decorative qualities.

Note! To increase the service life (due to improved sliding), it is advisable to choose hinges supported by a ball inserted inside, used as a bearing.

First, it is necessary to carefully verify all the installation dimensions of the structure, which ensure the placement of the canvas in the frame strapping with a gap of no more than two mm. Only after that you can start marking the places where the loops are welded on the canvas and frame itself. At the same time, it is necessary to ensure accurate alignment of the hinge seats, which, after welding, should be located strictly on the same centerline.

To prevent unauthorized removal of the gate, the hinges should be welded towards each other or equipped with a special stop preventing this.

Installation procedure

Before starting installation work, you need the following working tool:

  • electric welding machine with a set of electrodes;
  • a special grinding machine with a disc for metal processing;
  • level with a plumb line, tape measure and hammer.

And only after all the installation dimensions have been verified, and the necessary tool has been prepared, can you proceed to the main operations.

Note! The location of the loops in the vertical plane must be controlled by a plumb line, after which it will be possible to grab it by welding at several points. The same should be done with the counterparts of the hinges mounted on the door frame.

In this case, you should start with the lower loops, after welding of which it is necessary to check again for alignment (preferably using a laser level). Immediately after this, the upper hinges are seized, after which a control hinge of the gate can be made. In the process of such a hinge, the gate is checked for ease of movement, as well as for the presence of the required gaps.

In case of a satisfactory result, the hinges are finally welded in the same sequence (first the lower fastening, and then the upper one). When installing the hinges, due attention should be paid to the verticality of the line of their installation, as well as the aesthetics of the welded joints. For beautiful seams, you can grind them with an angle grinder.

Some subtleties of the installation procedures

When carrying out installation work, the following features of welding procedures should not be overlooked:

  1. When welding the gate hinges, it is desirable that the welding current does not flow through the support hinges. This is necessary so that welding tacks do not form in the loop itself. For this purpose, when welding the hinge, the contact clamp with "mass" must be fixed on the leaf itself. If the hinge is welded to a strapping element (to a post, for example), the clamp with "mass" can be transferred to this post.
  2. To exclude possible welding deformations, the hinges should be welded to the canvas and the box "crosswise".
  3. When hanging the gate on vertical metal posts, you should prudently leave a gap that allows the gate to open completely. (In the case of square supports, this is not necessary).
  4. In the event that the gates have a significant mass, you can organize the lubrication of the hinges by installing a special grease fitting in them, which provides oil supply to the zone of maximum support load.

Work safety

The organization of welding works of any class requires the contractor to comply with safety requirements. In this case, first of all, you will need to worry about the availability of appropriate protective equipment (special shield and gloves).

In addition, to ensure the required safety, welding work should be carried out in a well-ventilated area or in the open air, at a sufficient distance from flammable and combustible materials.
