Alexy, having become an eyewitness to the tearing down of the icon of Jesus Christ from the gates of the church, dropped the stairs on which the defiler stood. He died, and the believers, along with Alexy, were thrown into prison and severely tortured. He spent about a year in dungeons, undergoing endless torture. He was recognized as a martyr by the church. A little less than one hundred and forty years later, the body of the monk was found completely intact.
Saint Righteous Alexy Mechev, who was born in the middle of the nineteenth century, was dissuaded from the medical path by his mother. He studied at the Moscow Theological Seminary, served as a psalmist, steadfastly and resignedly enduring rough treatment from the priest. All my life was common man, even having acquired a dignity. He opened a parish school, his sermons were understandable to a simple parishioner. I witnessed how on the eve of the Great October Revolution a tear rolled from the eyes of the Mother of God. He died in 1923, and ten years later, when he was reburied, the body turned out to be incorrupt. Canonized in 2000.
