Getting to know the area
From Tokyo we will drive to Hakone Yumoto Station and from there we will begin our walk around the area. You will visit the Outpost Museum - the former checkpoint of the old tract, walk along its surviving part, and also visit the Hakone Shrine. After that, you will have a small boat trip along the lake, and then by cable car you will climb to a height of 1044 meters, where volcanic activity is observed. On the descent, you will go to one of the local small hotels and immerse yourself in the thermal waters (on some days it is impossible to visit the springs if it is a cleaning day).

Let's start with the fact that Hakone is not in vain famous for its hot springs - just a couple of centuries ago, the entire flower of the Japanese aristocracy rested here, and famous poets wrote their odes about local waters. However, now anyone can visit them, and it will cost him relatively inexpensively: from 500 to 2000 yen per person (depending on the resort).

Hot springs do not appear out of nowhere - they appeared because of the volcano of Mount Hakone, which, by the way, after its last eruption 3000 years ago, left a huge crater. Around it is a valley, which the locals simply called, Owakudani 大涌谷, which literally translates as "big boiling valley."

The seething rivers of sulfur water and geysers erupting from everywhere have a very specific smell, however, this is probably why they are so attractive to tourists. There is even a cable car for traveling over the valley, and eggs boiled in sulfur water are offered in a guest house nearby. According to the seller's assurances, black eggs prolong life by as much as seven years, but believe him or not - it's up to you.

If you climb a little higher, then soon you will be able to see the crater itself, in the funnel of which Lake Asinoko was formed. When you get there, you get the feeling that you are very far from civilization - you cannot see a soul around, and only from the hills can you see rare settlements located on the banks. However, this is not a problem at all, because a wonderful view of Mount Fuji opens from here, and two excursion ferries constantly run along the lake itself.

On one of its shores, at the foot of Mount Hakone, is the most famous of the local temples, the Hakone Temple. The path to it lies through the numerous torii gates installed right in the forest, and the building of the temple itself is surrounded by tall trees. Extraordinary atmosphere and amazing appearance attracts hundreds of tourists here every year, and who knows, maybe you will like it here too.

Eggs have long been boiled in the thermal waters of the springs - it is believed that this famous local delicacy prolongs life. From contact with salts, the shell turns black, and the protein smells slightly of sulfur. Eating more than two eggs at a time is highly discouraged!

From Owakudani, you can clearly see the snow-covered Fuji cone - this is one of the most favorite points of photographers. The last powerful eruption took place here in 1170 - and Lake Asi was later formed in the calderra of an extinct volcano. Now it is called "a piece of heaven" in the mountains - while "ovakudani" is translated as "great hell". The contrast of the steaming slopes and the majestic calmness of the water surface with the reflection of Fuji-yama is surprising - after all, both of these wonders of nature were generated by the same destructive force.
