Achilles - British Tier VI tank destroyer. Achilles - British Tier VI tank destroyer Wot Achilles

The 17-pound Achilles self-propelled anti-tank gun is a British modification of the American M10 Wolverine tank destroyer. The main difference between the British tank destroyer and the basic American one is the more powerful Ordnance QF 17-pounder anti-tank gun installed instead of the standard M7 caliber 3 "(76.2 mm). In total, British designers converted 1100 Lend-Lease M10s into Achilles. Thanks to this, the Achilles became the second largest British combat vehicle during the Second World War, equipped with a 17-pound cannon (the first place belongs to the Sherman Firefly, also based on the American original). Both versions of the combat vehicle were called "Achilles" in the British army: and with 3-inch and 17-pound cannon.At the same time, the M10 with a diesel engine was designated Achilles I, and the M10A1 with a gasoline engine was designated Achilles II. To distinguish the British version from the American one, the letter C was added to its designation, indicating that the vehicle was armed with a cannon QF 17-pdr (this is how the rearmed М10 was designated Achilles Iс, and М10А1 - Achilles IIс). True, the name "Achilles" in the official documentation is practically not used: tank destroyers were called 17pdr M10, 17pdr SP M10, and sometimes even Firefly. Over time, the designation Achilles came to be used exclusively for the tank destroyer armed with the QF 17-pounder. The main difference between the Achilles and the Wolverine, as mentioned earlier, was the 17-pounder gun instead of the standard 3-inch gun. The Ordnance QF 17-pounder significantly surpassed the basic M7 cannon in terms of its combat effectiveness: It is easy to see that only the scarce American HVAP sub-caliber shells could more or less compare in terms of armor penetration to the regular British APCBCs that entered the troops in huge numbers. The Achilles' 17-pound gun needed a counterweight to counterbalance its long barrel. It was mounted behind the muzzle brake and gave the British tank destroyer a characteristic appearance, which distinguished it from the American M10. The Achilles crews had to paint these protruding parts so that they would not unmask the combat vehicle. Another difference between the British tank destroyer and its American "relative" was the improved booking: in front and on the sides of the self-propelled gun were additional armor plates 17 mm thick, and on top of the turret a 20 mm armor shield was attached (the M10's turret was open and did not protect at all from threats from above). At the same time, the Browning M2HB 12.7 mm machine gun on the turret remained. Mounting a 17-pound gun on the M10 presented some difficulties. Fortunately for the British, the first batch of Wolverines had gun mounts originally designed to make it easier to change guns. This was due to the fact that it was planned to install a new 76.2 mm M1 cannon on the M10. Thanks to this, the British designers succeeded without special problems replace the standard "three-inch" model with the QF 17-pounder. True, this only applied to vehicles with a T71 turret: only the lighter American M1 gun could be placed in the T70 turret. The British planned to re-equip the QF 17-pr with about 1000 Lend-Lease M10s before the opening of the second front in Europe. However, for some reason, their modification did not begin until April 1944. By the "D-day" (June 6, 1944, the day of the landing of the allied forces in Normandy), only 124 "Wolverines" were converted, but then the number of "Achilles" produced constantly grew, and by the end of the year, 816 vehicles with 17-pound guns had entered the British troops. On D-Day itself, most British units received standard M10s rather than the more efficient Achilles. Moreover, the "Achilles" lost in the battle in the army often had to be reimbursed with "Wolverines", tk. Tank destroyers with 17-pound cannons were desperately lacking. The British crews, naturally, did not welcome such a replacement, rightly considering it unequal. In total, British troops received 1650 M10 anti-tank self-propelled guns under Lend-Lease, of which 1100 were rearmed with a 17-pound cannon until the end of the war. Unlike the Americans, who viewed the M10 as a fast tank hunter when the Germans were on the defensive, the British still used the Achilles as a mobile anti-tank gun. This was due to the fact that the most common British 6-pound anti-tank guns could penetrate the armor of the German Panzer IV and Sturmgeschutz with a standard armor-piercing projectile, but were unable to cope with the Tigers and Panthers. The heavier towed "17-pounders" pierced the armor of almost all Wehrmacht tanks, but required too much time to deploy and prepare for battle. As a result, the British used the Achilles as a highly mobile anti-tank gun, capable of supporting infantry and repelling German tank counterattacks until the batteries of the slower, towed QF 17-pounders were deployed. This tactic made it possible to ignore the main drawback of this tank destroyer - weak armor, because usually disguised in defensive positions, the gun was the first to hit the enemy combat vehicle. This concept of use fully reflected the original design of the designers - the idea of an anti-tank self-propelled gun capable of effectively repelling rapid tank attacks, so characteristic of the German "blitzkrieg". In defense, another drawback of the American-British tank destroyer was unimportant - only the manual turret rotation mode, which made this process too slow. The only circumstance in which the Wolverines and Achilles were used in the attack was the lack of Sherman and Cromwell medium tanks, also armed with 17-pound guns. In this case, the M10 and Achilles played the role of medium tanks and were used to support the heavy Churchill tanks. During the Allied landings in Normandy, the Achilles entered service with the anti-tank regiments of the Royal Artillery and the Royal Canadian Artillery. Such a regiment included 4 batteries: 2 towed QF 17-pounder batteries, 1 Achilles battery and 1 Wolverine M10 battery. As far as possible, the Rossomakh batteries were rearmed with Achilles. Perhaps the most successful Achilles were used during Operation Charnwood. Thus, the anti-tank self-propelled guns of the 245th battery of the 62nd anti-tank regiment of the Royal Artillery, attached to the Hamilton Light Infantry Regiment, destroyed 13 Panthers and Pz IVs from the 12th SS Panzer Regiment during the battles for the city of Caen. At the same time, 4 Achilles from the 62nd regiment were completely destroyed, and 4 more were damaged. The commander of the 15th Scottish division, Major General Barber, talks to the crew of Achilles, February 20, 1945 Wehrmacht servicemen near the destroyed self-propelled gun Achilles, Normandy, 1944 Achilles during the Reichswald offensive, February 8, 1945 Achilles from the 75th anti-tank regiment of the 11th Armored Division artillery, Holland, October 12, 1944

Good day and welcome to the site! Friends, today we will talk about a device, the game on which can rightfully be called comfortable, we will talk about a British Tier 6 tank destroyer with a very sonorous name, in front of you Achilles guide.

According to their design features this machine very much resembles another self-propelled gun, an American classmate called the M36 Jackson. However, in reality, the British Achilles WoT is a completely different tank, which we will now meet.

TTX Achilles

Perhaps, we should start with the fact that we have at our disposal a margin of safety that is quite worthy for a Tier 6 tank destroyer, as well as an excellent base view range of 370 meters, which is very pleasing.

However, the survivability parameters can rightfully be considered the Achilles heel of our Briton. The first thing that immediately catches the eye at the sight of this self-propelled gun, tank Achilles has a bloated and high silhouette, that is, our dimensions are quite shed, which is why the disguise is not the best.

At the same time, things are not doing better with reservations. Let's start with a very large hull and everyone pushes us into the frontal projection, even tanks of the fifth level do not experience difficulties with this. The thing is that even with a good slope at Achilles characteristics VLD reservations do not exceed 68 millimeters.

With the turret, the situation is not much better, since the large gun mantlet, even taking into account small slopes, has a reduced thickness of about 82 millimeters, behind it we have a void, that is, to pierce Achilles tank in the forehead it will not be difficult even for the fifth levels.

Unfortunately, there is nothing to say about the sides in our case. Even at an angle, the frail 24 millimeters in the side of the hull make their way easily, the tower is almost the same in thickness from the side, and you should especially be wary of land mines, because they will most likely inflict full damage on us.

However, among all this variety of mediocrity, there is also a strong side - driving performance. It means that the maximum speed of the self-propelled gun is good, the dynamics are absolutely wonderful, and the maneuverability is at a very decent level.

Cannon

Armament in the case of self-propelled anti-tank installations always deserves closer attention, however, in our case, the parameters of the gun are rather controversial.

Primarily, Achilles cannon has one of the smallest one-time damage rates among classmates. But you should not despair, this omission is more than compensated for by the high rate of fire, while we can inflict approximately 2050 damage per minute, without installed equipment and pumped up perks.

With the penetration of the situation, the situation is no worse, ordinary armor-piercing shells are enough to confidently penetrate tanks from the fifth to seventh levels, and eights Achilles tank WoT punches well into the sides. However, in case a really strong tank appears in your sight, it is better to carry about 15 sub-calibers with you.

Even the accuracy of our cannon can be mentioned with a good word. British tank Achilles got a very comfortable spread, fairly fast mixing, and against the background of these parameters, you won't even notice any stabilization problems.

There is one in this barrel of honey and a fly in the ointment. The problem is elevation angles, which are only -5 degrees, which is very uncomfortable. But on the other hand, you will never feel a lack of horizontal guidance, because Tank destroyer Achilles World of Tanks equipped with an albeit slow, full-fledged rotating tower.

Advantages and disadvantages

When playing any tank in our game, it is extremely important to understand its main strengths and weaknesses, because tactics of behavior in battle are based on this knowledge. Of course, everything has already been said in the analysis general characteristics and the parameters of the tool, but for greater clarity, it is better to highlight the advantages and disadvantages Achilles WoT separately.
Pros:
Excellent review rate;
Good mobility;
High rate of fire and DPM;
Decent penetration parameters;
Good accuracy;
Fully rotating turret.
Minuses:
Bad booking;
Shed dimensions and rather weak camouflage;
Small alpha-ride;
Poor elevation angles.

Equipment for Achilles

To make your time in battle more comfortable and you can show good results, it is important to choose the right additional modules for the tank. Of course, the most necessary characteristics should be preferred, so that for Achilles equipment it is better to put this:
1. - an excellent choice for any combat vehicle, which in our case will make the DPM even more dangerous.
2. - with our good review this module will be quite enough to surpass the majority of classmates in the review and keep up with the higher-level technique.
3. - also a good option, because standing in one place in the bushes will make you harder to find, and accordingly, the process of inflicting damage will be safer.

As such, there are no alternatives to the set of three modules proposed above, but if for some reason you still do not have enough, you can put the third item instead. But again, the proposed set is optimal.

Crew training

As for the choice and leveling of skills, this aspect will be pretty standard for a tank destroyer, which will need to sit a lot in the bushes on the second lane. That is, first of all, we give preference to inconspicuousness, do not forget about improving the accuracy and general parameters of the machine. In other words, on Tank destroyer Achilles perks look like this:
Commander -,,,.
Gunner -,,,.
Driver mechanic - , , , .
Radio operator -,,,.
Charger -,,,.

Equipment for Achilles

Another standard that you definitely need to think about before going into battle is the purchase of consumables. You can feel good in a battle with a set of, and, so it will be much cheaper. But for greater safety, it is recommended to carry on Achilles outfit more expensive -,,, where the last item can be replaced by.

Achilles tactics

By the combination of the advantages and disadvantages of this device, we can say that a very strong car turned out to be in our hands. Of course, a special approach is needed to it, but remembering about the weak booking and large dimensions, for Achilles tactics more suitable ambush, so to speak, typical for many tank destroyers.

Thus, at the very beginning of the battle, make sure to take a position in the bushes on the second line as quickly as possible. Here it will be more difficult to detect you, respectively, to implement the DPM of a rapid-fire weapon, which is possessed by Achilles tank will be much easier and safer.

When taking up a position, be aware of poor elevation angles, that is, the area on which you will be standing should be more or less level. Standing in the distance Tank destroyer Achilles WoT is able to very effectively shoot damage to the allied light, an accurate weapon will help you with this. Thus, you can provide serious assistance to your team.

As for close combat, it is better not to engage in it at all, because everyone can break through us. For this reason, the player on Achilles World of Tanks must constantly monitor the mini-map and in case of danger, it is better to use his excellent mobility and leave as quickly as possible, perhaps even change the flank.

In special cases, we can play the role of a medium tank, highlighting enemy positions for allied vehicles. But be extremely careful, move gradually and even in such cases try not to glow. Especially tank Achilles vulnerable to land mines, so we need to be afraid of artillery and monsters like the KV-2.

In accordance with the Lend-Lease program, the Americans supplied the UK with a wide variety of military equipment and weapons. Among the armored vehicles arriving from the United States were anti-tank self-propelled artillery mounts M10 Wolverine, equipped with a 3-inch M7 cannon. This gun was created back in 1918, and the possibilities for its improvement were practically exhausted. The British knew this very well and decided to install on some M10s their powerful long-barreled 17-pound (76.2-mm) anti-tank gun, which could stop any German tank during the Second World War.

The Achilles was a good combat vehicle with a relatively low silhouette and a satisfactory ballistic profile. The body of the machine is made by welding from sheets of rolled steel armor with a thickness of 12.7 mm to 50.8 mm, installed with rational angles of inclination. In front of the self-propelled gun hull, an open-top turret of circular rotation was installed, in which the crew members and part of the ammunition were located. Thus, the crew of the tank destroyer was at a disadvantage: it was vulnerable to shell fragments, mines, small arms fire and air attacks.

The power plant "Achilles" consisted of two six-cylinder in-line liquid-cooled diesel engines GMC 6046 G71 from General Motors, located in parallel and connected in one unit: the torque from both was transmitted to one propeller shaft. Each of the diesels developed a power of 276 kW at 2100 rpm, which allowed the 30-ton tank destroyer to move on paved roads at a maximum speed of 48 km / h. When driving on country roads, the speed dropped to 32 km / h. The power unit interacted with a mechanical five-speed gearbox, which provided movement forward in five gears and backward in one. A double differential was used as a swing mechanism.
The undercarriage, in relation to one side, consisted of six rubberized road wheels, interlocked in pairs in three bogies with vertical buffer springs, three rubberized supporting rollers, a front drive wheel and a rear guide wheel. The fine-link caterpillar consisted of 79 metal or rubber-metal tracks.

Achilles is a British tier 6 tank destroyer, added in patch 0.9.5.

The British modification of the American M10 tank destroyer, has undergone a standard modification by installing an English gun.

History reference

The last representative of Lend-Lease technology in the new branch. Of the 1,648 M10s delivered to the UK from 1943 to 1944, 1,100 were rearmed with a British 17-pounder cannon.

Was in service with the British armed forces until the end of the 50s of the twentieth century.

Overview

The Achilles is another car that has benefited from British tuning. And it's not just about replacing the gun, and adding hit points (which, by the way, made Achilles the third after the AT8 and Churchill GC), the car became noticeably frolic, and so much so that the English M10 runs faster than the English Sherman.

In my opinion, it is on this machine that the 17-pound cannon is fully revealed: the aiming and rate of fire parameters are better only in the PT-7, but at the same time we have the most comfortable range of battle levels. In general, from the British conversion of the M10, a very, very good TP of the 6th level turned out, something in between Jackson and Hellcat.

Advantages

  • Good disguise
  • Rotating tower
  • Excellent weapon
  • Good dynamic performance
  • Versatility on the battlefield
  • Excellent penetration by a sub-caliber projectile

Due to the lack of armor, the player needs to stay behind the allied group of tanks in order not to take all the damage from the enemy team, so mobility should be used to cover allied tanks, and not rush forward. Effective premium shells will allow you to inflict damage on any enemy tanks, even if they are at the bottom of the list.

Description

Cool sights "Achilles" for World of Tanks 1.6.0.7(sniper + arcade) from the rest is distinguished by the combination of simplicity and beauty at the same time. In addition, it can also boast of a fairly high information content thanks to its highly accurate and not overloaded with bright colors interface.

Sniper scope

Mode sniper scope has the highest information content, and therefore we will consider it first.

Zoom or magnification- this digital indicator shows how close the target is in the scope of your optics. There are several indicators in total, but most often they range from 1 maximum value- 8, up to the 2nd maximum - 32, the minimum value usually cannot be less than 2.

Vertical and horizontal crosshair segments- these dashes show where you should focus your gaze if you lost concentration in the confusion of the battle. In reality, these segments allow you to more accurately take the target, but in our game this function was taken over by the circle of information, and the segments of the crosshair simply allow you to better concentrate on the target and not get confused, for example, when you need to aim at the enemy under dense fire.

Center of the circle of information- the center of the aiming circle is nothing more than a regular aiming circle (which you are used to in a standard scope). It is framed by a large and static aiming circle, which, thanks to the crosshair and light blue border, helps to better aim at the target.

Stock of currently selected shells- shows how many shells of this type are currently in stock. 31 is the number of shells (pieces), which corresponds to the value of the stock of armor-piercing shells at the bottom of the screen. Please note that when switching to a different type of shells or consuming them, this indicator will change accordingly.

Safety factor value- so that you, in tense moments of the battle, are not distracted by tracking how much HP the tank has left, this indicator is displayed on the lower area of the aiming sector. The numbers are small, but clearly visible, which does not distract and allows you to clearly see how much HP is left in your tank, without leaving the sniper mode.

Average recharge time- shows how long it will take to reload the gun on average. For example, this is 8.02 seconds, please note that each weapon has different reload times.

Remaining time to full recharge- shows how much is left before reloading the gun. This process is accompanied by filling in the reload indicator (under the projectile sketch), and the process is emphasized by the change in the corresponding color scheme of the indicator.

Arcade sight

The arcade sight can be called very simple and at the same time quite informative - in general, what many players need - so that when a tank is moving or a banal waiting in the arcade sight mode, the screen is not overloaded with unnecessary information.

Average recharge time- shows how long it will take on average to reload a given weapon (seconds).

Implement charging status- shows the state of charging the tank gun is, when fully charged, the inscription "Ready" appears.

Circle of information- the usual circle of information, only with more saturated colors. In the arcade sight mode, we see only such a circle of information, and there is no aiming sector (and crosshair).

Charging indicator- shows at what stage of charging the weapon is.

General safety margin- shows the numerical value of the safety factor, which corresponds to that on the damage panel.

Number of selected shells- shows how many shells are left of the type that is currently selected. If you selected armor-piercing, then a value will be shown that corresponds to their stock on the consumable panel, if high-explosive fragmentation is selected, a different value will be shown.

Conclusion

The arcade sniper scope "Achilles" belongs to the "moderate" type, that is, it is at the same time rich in various colorful interface elements, but at the same time it is not overloaded with unnecessary elements, bright colors and large amounts of information. So you can recommend it to a fairly large circle of people, but on condition that you are ready to spend a little time adapting and studying the features of the interface, until you master it fully, then your shooting efficiency will go uphill.
