Self-propelled artillery mount M44 (USA). Self-propelled artillery mount M44 (USA) What modules to put on the M44

Artillery units of the US Army met the beginning of the fifties, armed with several self-propelled guns of fairly old models. This technique was mainly created or began to be developed during the Second World War. The operation of the existing vehicles continued, but the ground forces needed new models with improved characteristics. One of the first post-war attempts to update the ACS fleet was the M44 SPH project.

The most powerful self-propelled artillery system used by American forces during the Korean War was the 155 mm Howitzer Motor Carriage M41. This self-propelled gun was distinguished by high firepower and good combat effectiveness, but still it was not devoid of disadvantages. An insufficiently protected fighting compartment was considered one of the main problems of the existing design. The gunners had to work in a low deckhouse, without a roof, because of which they were at increased risk. In addition, the M41 was built on the basis of the M24 light tank, which could no longer be called a new technique.

At the very beginning of the fifties, even before the end of the fighting on the Korean Peninsula, the American military department formed requirements for a promising howitzer self-propelled gun, designed to replace the existing M41 HMC vehicles in the near future. In the new project, it was necessary to use ideas and solutions that have already been tested by time, but at the same time, a promising self-propelled gun should have been based on a different chassis and be distinguished by the presence of full-fledged crew protection. Thus, the main innovations of the project were the use of a completely closed wheelhouse and chassis based on the units of the M41 Walker Bulldog light tank.

The project of a new self-propelled gun with a 155-mm howitzer received the working title T94. Later, as the project developed, the designation T94E1 was introduced. At a certain point, it was decided to radically redesign the body of the car, as a result of which the name T194E1 appeared. In 1954, a new technique that matched latest version project, was put into service under the official name M44 Self-Propelled Howitzer.

In the T99 project, it was proposed to use a number of already mastered ideas and solutions, primarily of a layout nature. A promising self-propelled gun was supposed to have a front engine-transmission compartment and a single large manned compartment in the stern, accommodating the crew, weapons and ammunition. The M41 tank proposed for use as a base had a classic layout, because of which its units had to undergo significant processing.

The existing tank chassis was literally turned backwards and rebuilt as required. The frontal part of the self-propelled guns hull, formerly the stern of the tank, consisted of two inclined sheets 12.7 mm thick. The vertical sides of the hull, located next to the chassis, had the same thickness. About a third of the hull's length was occupied by the vertical roof of the engine compartment, behind which a large wheelhouse was placed. The crew and the gun were to be protected by a box-shaped polygonal unit assembled from 12.7 mm armor plates. The front of the wheelhouse consisted of two side units, between which there was a swinging gun mask. To the left of it, a vertical sheet with a small inclined section at the top was provided, and to the right was a part with an L-shaped notch and fasteners for transporting various property. The sides and aft of the felling were made vertical. From above, the crew was protected by a horizontal roof equipped with several hatches.

A hinged ramp was provided in the aft deckhouse. The opener was fixed on it, which was necessary to hold the combat vehicle in place during firing. When the coulter was lowered, the hinged stern leaf took a horizontal position. In the stowed position, the ramp was placed vertically, and the opener rose above the ground.

In the forward compartment of the hull there was a six-cylinder gasoline engine of the opposed layout of the Continental AOS-895-3 type, which developed up to 500 hp. The engine was mated to an Allison CD-500-3 manual transmission with two forward speeds and one reverse. There was a fuel system with tanks with a capacity of 570 liters. In terms of design, the power unit of the new T99 ACS was supposed to be a slightly redesigned engine compartment of the Walker Bulldog base tank. The differences between the two cars were associated with the "reversal" of the chassis and the need to change the direction of rewinding tracks.

The chassis of the new ACS was supposed to be based on existing units, but at the same time it received a changed composition. On each side, it was proposed to mount not five, like the base tank, but six road wheels. The rollers had individual torsion bar suspension, and the first, second and fifth pairs were also equipped with additional shock absorbers. The rear roller of each side was lowered to the ground, but at the same time served as a guide wheel. The driving wheels were located at the front of the hull. Four supporting rollers were used per board. The caterpillar was 530 mm wide and provided support on a surface with a length of 3.8 m.

In front of the manned cabin there was an installation for mounting the swinging part of the main gun of the self-propelled guns. The M114 field howitzer was chosen as the "main caliber", modified in accordance with the need for mounting on a self-propelled chassis. The gun of this type had a rifled barrel of 155 mm caliber, 3.79 m long. The howitzer had a piston bolt and was equipped with hydropneumatic recoil devices. The cylinders of the latter were under the barrel and above it. According to reports, when adapting to use on self-propelled guns, the M114 howitzer was deprived of the standard carriage, instead of which the M80 type machine was now used.

The gun mount of the ACS T94 made it possible to perform horizontal guidance within a sector with a width of 30 °. The elevation angles varied from -5 ° to + 65 °. The available sighting devices made it possible to fire both direct fire and from closed positions.

The M114 gun used separate loading with a propellant charge in the sleeve. There were five options for a charge weighing from 2.69 kg to 6.31 kg, intended for firing at different ranges. The gun could use the entire existing range of 155-mm shells for various purposes. The crew could use high-explosive fragmentation, smoke, chemical, lighting and practical ammunition of several types. Depending on the type, the muzzle velocity could reach 550-565 m / s. The maximum firing range was 14.6 km. During further development howitzers and by creating new shells, the range of fire was increased by several hundred meters.

In the fighting compartment, on the stern sheets of the wheelhouse, vertical racks were placed for transporting ammunition. The limited available volume in combination with the dimensions of the shells and casings affected the size of the ammunition. Only 24 shots were placed on the racks. For a long time, firing required the help of other vehicles and the supply of shots from the ground.

As an additional weapon for self-defense, the self-propelled gun was supposed to use the "traditional" for American armored vehicles of that time, the M2HB heavy machine gun. The turret of this was on the roof of the wheelhouse, at its left side. The machine gun was guided manually with a circular aiming horizontally. Machine gun ammunition - 900 rounds.

The self-propelled crew included five people. Immediately behind the frontal leaf of the cabin were the driver (to the left of the gun) and the gunner (to the right). The commander of the self-propelled gun was behind the gunner and had to conduct observation with the help of optical instruments on his hatch. The rest of the fighting compartment was given to two loaders. One of them also served as a shooter controlling a large-caliber machine gun. A crew of five could fire up to four howitzer rounds per minute. If it was necessary to fire for a long time, the rate of fire dropped to one shot per minute.

The promising T99 self-propelled guns turned out to be not too large, but the use of a relatively heavy weapon led to corresponding results. The length of the vehicle was 6.16 m, width - 3.24 m, height - 3.11 m. The height of the line of fire was 2.1 m. Combat weight - 29 tons. Specific power over 17 hp. per ton allowed the self-propelled gun to reach a speed of 56 km / h with a cruising range of 120 km. A ditch 1.8 m wide was crossed, and a 76-cm wall was raised. Reservoirs up to 1.1 m deep were forded.

The use of ready-made chassis and guns, which did not require serious processing, made it possible to accelerate the development of the project. A few months after the start design work a prototype with the experimental designation T99E1 came out for testing. This machine showed itself well at the test site, after which it was decided to start mass production. The order for the construction of serial howitzer self-propelled guns was received by Massey Harris. Soon after that, the army received the first vehicles of a new type and began to master them.

After the start of the operation of serial equipment, serious problems were identified, which forced the development of a new version of the project. During the firing practice, it became clear that the existing fighting compartment, made in the form of a large closed wheelhouse, does not have sufficient ventilation. Powder gases quickly accumulated inside the wheelhouse and, at least, made it difficult for the crew. Further operation of equipment with similar problems was not possible. Serial production of cars was suspended until the shortcomings were eliminated. By this time, the contractor company managed to build and transfer 250 self-propelled guns to the army.

In the course of work on optimizing ventilation, the project managed to get a new designation T194E1. The study of the existing problem showed that in order to solve it, it would be necessary to abandon one of the main ideas of the project. The organization of proper ventilation of a fully enclosed fighting compartment was not possible. It was suggested to get rid of powder gases with the help of atmospheric air and wind. For this, the existing roof was removed from the deckhouse. As a result, the car was left without upper hatches. The machine gun turret on a ring base had to be fixed on the left side of the hull. It was proposed to observe the situation without the use of special equipment. At the same time, for greater driving convenience, a small windshield was fixed above the control post on the front sheet.

The development of the T194E1 project and the need to rebuild the already manufactured armored vehicles led to the postponement of the start of the full-fledged operation of the equipment. Two and a half hundred self-propelled guns were altered until 1954. After that, all new machines were initially built with an open wheelhouse. In the same 1954, a new self-propelled howitzer in the latest version was adopted under the name M44.

In view of the rejection of the roof, the M44 crews were asked to protect themselves from precipitation using a tarpaulin awning. Interestingly, in some parts of the army, local craftsmen independently equipped the open hull with supporting arcs, which made it possible to raise the awning to a more comfortable height. Nevertheless, not all ACS have gone through this "modernization".

The full operation of the latest armored vehicles began only in 1954, which is why it was simply late for the Korean War. After identifying the shortcomings of the fighting compartment, the production of equipment was stopped. Already finished 250 machines have been modernized, after which the construction new technology not renewed.

In the second half of the fifties, the new self-propelled guns underwent modernization, which consisted in the installation of the AOS-895-6 engine. Other units of the machine were not replaced. The project for such a modernization bore the designation M44A1. By the end of the decade, the entire fleet of 250 self-propelled guns received new engines.

The service of the M44 / M44A1 howitzer self-propelled guns in the American army continued until the first half of the sixties, when it was decided to remove such equipment from service. The existing machines did not differ in high performance, and in addition, newer and more successful models of technology appeared. In 1963, it was decided to write off the existing M44s and replace them with self-propelled M109 units. This technique had a similar caliber guns, but differed in higher technical and combat characteristics.

In 1956, self-propelled guns M44 for the first time replenished the fleet. foreign country... In accordance with the existing agreements on military assistance, the United States transferred a number of military vehicles to the UK, including 58 M44 units. In the British army, American technology received the name Cardinal; most of the machines went to serve in continental Europe. In the middle of 1968, the British military were able to renew the fleet of self-propelled artillery, thanks to which the need for the "Cardinals" disappeared. All machines that remained in operation were returned to their previous owners.

After decommissioning in the USA and Great Britain, the decommissioned self-propelled guns were not disposed of. They were repaired and sold to third countries. The new operators of the M44 / M44A1 were Italy, Jordan, Greece, Turkey and Japan. In most cases, it was about the delivery of several dozen machines. This technique was used until the end of the seventies, after which it was abandoned due to moral and physical obsolescence.

Of particular interest is the transfer of armored vehicles to the Turkish military. They received more than 220 M44 self-propelled guns and used them quite actively. In the mid-eighties, Turkey initiated the modernization of this technology. The M44T project was created with the help of several companies from Germany, which implied a deep modernization of existing equipment. The self-propelled gun was supposed to receive a new power plant, new weapons, etc. Until 1992, all available vehicles were modernized according to this project and continued to serve. Earlier it was reported that the Turkish army later abandoned such equipment due to its final obsolescence. However, in 2015, the M44T self-propelled gun was spotted in Northern Syria, which indicates at least limited operation of obsolete vehicles.

According to reports, there are currently several hundred M44 self-propelled howitzers. About four dozen vehicles were previously operated by the armies of several countries, and after decommissioning they became museum exhibits. This number, however, does not include the vehicles allegedly remaining in service and in the reserves of the Turkish army. Thus, from the point of view of safety, the M44 ACS can be considered one of the most successful examples of armored vehicles in recent decades.

The American T99 / T194E1 / M44 self-propelled gun is quite interesting. It was created to replace the existing equipment of an obsolete type and was supposed to help the troops to fight in Korea. Nevertheless, serious mistakes were made in the project, because of which the equipment was literally late for the war. The combination of not the newest chassis with a fairly old model gun, as well as relatively small production volumes, did not allow the technology to have a noticeable impact on the development of the artillery troops. However, 250 self-propelled guns remained in the army for a decade, and then almost all of these vehicles were sold to third countries. It was the armies of other states that were able to realize the potential of the equipment, at least in terms of service life. Separate samples of this technique can still be used by the troops.

BMW M44 engine reliability, problems and repair

The modified 16-valve M44 engine entered the assembly line in 1996 as a replacement. The M42 was taken as the basis for creating a new engine and, in its image, the working volume in it was increased to 1.9 liters. In the new engine, the cylinder diameter was increased to 85 mm (it was 84 mm) and new pistons were used, a new crankshaft with a stroke of 83.5 was installed (it was 81 mm), and lightweight connecting rods.
All this is covered with a new cylinder head, with a modified design of the valve drive. The hydraulic compensators remained, the diameter of the inlet / outlet valves remained the same (33 / 30.5 mm). Characteristics of standard M44 camshafts: phase 240/244, lift 9.7 / 9.7. The pump was improved, from now on it stopped flowing. The intake was completely redesigned, the intake manifold received a DISA length adjustment system. Engine management system replaced with Bosch DME M5.2.
This engine was used on BMW 18is cars, mainly in North America.
In 2001, a replacement for the M44 and the entire line of four-cylinder engines with the letter M came out, the new engine was named

Alas, for most artillery enthusiasts, the M44 will be a disappointment after the excellent M41. Despite the fact that the tank is one level higher, it has practically the same weapon as that of its younger brother, and large dimensions do not bode well at all.

General information.

Being developed on the basis of the American light tank M41 Walker Bulldog, the artillery partially retained its driving performance, but more likely that's all. The circular armor of 12 mm and rather large dimensions make this self-propelled gun an easy prey for even the smallest LT with machine guns in service. The weapon is also not very remarkable in terms of characteristics, although it does not lag behind the average among classmates. As a result, we can say that the M44 is the most unbalanced artillery at the 6th level.

Detailed Key Features:

One-time average damage is 700 units.

Rate of fire - 2.73 rounds per minute.

Aiming time -6 seconds.

Equipment, as with most artillery:

Howitzer gun rammer - increasing the total damage per minute by improving the characteristics of the gun.

Conversion drives - by itself, the conversion speed is also directly related to both the rate of fire and accuracy.

Coated optics are wonderful pieces of equipment. It can be extremely useful sometimes, especially when you are alone. However, if you do not like to drag battles, and are ready to trust your allies, then it is better to put a camouflage net, in one of 20 battles it can help.

Equipment you can install this:

Repair kit.

First aid kit.

Coke box (the fact is that the one-time damage we have is not the greatest, and in order to keep up with classmates, it would be nice to increase, at least the rate of fire, and other characteristics will increase, which is also not bad).

Crew.

After M41 we lose the radio operator, but another loader comes to replace him. Let's take him some useless perk, for example, intuition (it can come in handy if you carry several gold shells with you). We swing a desperate one to the first loader, because lowering hit points to 10% is just for us to spit, and the additional rate of fire will be just right. We teach the mechanic to the driver a virtuoso, which will help a little in the fight against LT. We swing the light for the commander by itself, and the gunner smoothly turn the turret in order to better realize our large horizontal aiming angle of 60 degrees. The second perk we all swing the Combat Brotherhood, and the third we take the disguise skill.

Set of skills:

Commander: 6th Sense, Brotherhood of War, Disguise.

Driver Mechanic: Virtuoso, Combat Brotherhood, Disguise.

Gunner: smooth turret rotation, Brotherhood of war, disguise.

Charger: Intuition, Combat Brotherhood, Disguise.

Loader: Desperate, Brotherhood of War, disguise.

Weaknesses M44.

Large dimensions, which makes our vehicle very visible, and invisibility for artillery is very important. Small one-time damage and rather low penetration by a land mine. In situations where one powerful shot is needed, this is very frustrating. The virtual absence of armor puts the life of our car in great danger. A meeting with even the most harmless firefly can end fatally.

Strengths of M44.

Although the gun has only 700 damage at level 6, the M44 is quite fast-firing and has good firing accuracy. The good dynamics of the tank, which came from the Bulldog, often helps when changing positions, and a mobile SPG is always a big plus for the team.

Combat tactics on the M44.

The tactics are almost the same as those already familiar with the M41. You shoot, move, and that's the whole fight. As before, your goal is not to take frags, but to deal the main damage. Although, very armored targets with few hit points that solo flank and offend your allies with impunity deserve to be destroyed. The only innovation is that you need to take into account the dimensions of your car. M44 is significantly larger than M41, which means that you need to choose the cover more carefully.

Good day and welcome to the site! Friends, now we will talk about another instance of long-range vehicles, now it will be an American Tier 6 Artillery-gun and in front of you M44 guide.

By the totality of its parameters, this self-propelled gun can be called very comfortable and strong. However, let's not get ahead of ourselves, but first let's analyze M44 specifications, let's talk about how best to equip this machine, in what order to study the perks and figure out the tactics of warfare.

TTX M44

As always, we will start our review with the simplest. This American artillery, as befits this class of equipment, has a very small margin of safety and, moreover, our base view range is completely useless.

From the point of view of security, this device is very weak and this is manifested in everything. First of all, at M44 TTX the bookings are very bad. "Naked" numbers already look quite modest, and the fact that we have absolutely no slopes in the armor means that we won't even have to talk about the reduced figure. In other words, even the most seedy firefly with a stock gun will pierce us into any projection, and the arrival of a land mine will leave only a charred carcass in the place of our car.

Artillery in our favorite game has another important criterion for survivability - disguise. But unfortunately, american tank M44 WoT got a rather large silhouette and the overall dimensions of the car indicate that the camouflage coefficient in our case is meager.

As for the question of the driving performance of the car, everything is more than worthy. We can say with confidence that Art-ACS M44 World of Tanks there is an excellent maximum speed and very decent dynamics, but the maneuverability at our disposal is very, very bad.

Cannon

So the time has come to talk about the armament of our American woman and I immediately want to say that although our cannon is formidable, there are more terrible barrels at the level, however, there are very enviable moments here.

Have M44 cannon has not the largest, but very decent one-time damage, as well as a good rate of fire, thanks to which a very convenient process of inflicting damage is achieved.

Since the release of update 0.9.18, the M44 tank can fire exclusively high-explosive shells, but now we have the opportunity not only to inflict damage on the enemy, but also to stun enemy vehicles that have fallen into our fragmentation zone, which is 7 meters around the fall of the projectile.

We are not talking in vain about the complexity of an accurate hit with a cumulative projectile, because the big problem of this self-propelled gun is accuracy. The bottom line is that the American M44 art got very bad dispersion parameters, but our gun comes down really quickly. In addition, we have the best horizontal guidance angles at the level, which in total are as much as 60 degrees.

Advantages and disadvantages

Since we have already discussed the main characteristics of this device, as well as the parameters of weapons, we can summarize the first results, that is, it's time to highlight the most important strengths and weaknesses. Art-ACS M44 World of Tanks.
Pros:
Good maximum speed and dynamics;
Not a bad one-time damage;
Decent rate of fire;
Quite fast mixing;
Excellent horizontal guidance angles.
Minuses:
Cardboard armor;
Large silhouette and weak disguise;
Poor maneuverability;
Poor accuracy.

Equipment for М44

For the class of self-propelled artillery mounts, the choice of additional modules in our game does not differ in a large number of variations, or rather, the set is often more than standard. This means that, including tank M44 equipment we will put this:
1. - this is a simple and good opportunity to make your reload faster, which should not be missed on artillery.
2. - despite the good mixing speed, this parameter on the arte always needs to be improved, because it is more convenient to implement damage this way.
3. - camouflage always plays an important role in survival, and especially this module is needed with such impressive dimensions as ours.

Crew training

The correct distribution of skills among the crew members and consistency in this matter are far from the last role in the game on this vehicle. But as in the previous section, this aspect can also be called standard, since for most artillery in World of Tanks, pumping is about the same. For this reason, for Art-SPG M44 perks we will study the following:
Commander (radio operator) -,,,.
Gunner -,,,.
Driver mechanic - , , , .
Charger -,,,.
Charger -,,,.

Equipment for М44

We all understand perfectly well that it is wrong and rash to go into battle without consumables. Here, if you do not have a lot of silver, it is better to take,,. But, of course, it is much safer to carry on M44 gear from,,, and the last option, if possible, is better to replace with, because the boost of characteristics will never hurt.

M44 tactics

On the one hand, the game with artillery seems simple, but in fact you need to take into account a lot of little things, as well as learn to feel the time of the projectile's flight and be able to calculate the trajectory of its flight.

Moreover, at the very beginning of the battle on M44 tactics, as with most artillery, is to take an advantageous position as quickly as possible. The good mobility of this vehicle will help you with this, and here you mainly need to combine positioning safety with the ability to comfortably fire at enemy positions.

American tank М44 WoT has very comfortable vertical guidance angles, which somewhat simplifies the occupation of a vantage point. The firing sector is so large that you can easily fire more than half of the map without even moving your hull. This means that the M44 self-propelled gun spends less time on mixing, and we also save the camouflage bonus that the camouflage net gives us.

However, despite the reduced need to move, it is important to remember that you may be searched for by tracers, so after each shot M44 art must move, increasing its survival rate. By the way, if you know the map well, you can also look for enemy gunners by tracers, if successful, you will significantly increase your team's chances of winning.

For the rest, you should always remember about your weak armor and a small margin of safety, that is, let the enemy approach you for Art-ACS M44 World of Tanks in no case is it possible.
