The focused attention of the PR department and the public on stability only increased the anxious feelings. Was it too expensive?

    If you believe the army documents and the stories of experienced stalkers, the assumption that the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986 is the least mystery in a series of strange events that finally changed the appearance of this piece of the Earth looks quite true. Twenty years after the accident, the Zone experienced a cataclysm of unknown nature, which destroyed almost all living things and radically changed its world and internal structure... For two long years, scientists unsuccessfully tried to understand the nature of the new Zone. It was then that people who called themselves stalkers appeared in the Zone inhabited only by scientists and military men. Time passed, stalkers became more and more. In 2012, a stalker with the callsign Shooter solved the Scorcher's riddle - and opened the way to the center of the Zone. Stalkers rushed there - someone in search of the legendary Klondike Artifacts, someone no less than the legendary Wishmaster. The military also sensed a chance to take control of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and organized Operation Fairway. The reconnaissance group of helicopters rushed to the center of the Zone, but the operation failed - for unknown reasons, all the helicopters crashed. Major Degtyarev, a former stalker, is sent to the Zone to search for helicopters and study the reasons for the failure of the operation. Deep in the Zone, communication with the Center is lost, and now the major must rely on himself ...

    All this will helpfully tell us in a beautiful introductory video, stylized as old photographs. And then the game itself begins ...

    The first thing that catches your eye is the size of the levels. There are not many of them, but they are really big. We start at the Zaton, a dry river bed, where the skeletons of ships are still preserved, in one of which local stalkers settled. Then we get to Jupiter, where Debt and Svoboda live side by side at the Yanov station. Then we will visit the dungeons of Pripyat, which will have to wade together with the team of stalkers we have assembled and equipped. And, finally, the stunning Pripyat recreated in detail, along which, in contrast to "Shadows of Chernobyl", we will be allowed to walk in plenty. In addition, there are several other underground locations, for example, laboratory X8. I am glad that the player is not only allowed to explore the locations, but he is also encouraged to do so. Firstly, the game has quests without direct instructions, say, "find two comrades of Cardan's mechanic." Only a curious player has a chance to stumble upon them, while others will never help the old drunkard in his search. Secondly, hunting for artifacts is still quite a lucrative business. By the way, large anomalies in the game are worked out wonderfully and look mesmerizing.

    We will move not only on our own, but also with the help of guides. Each level has about a dozen important objects, and some stalkers are ready to deliver us to any of them for money, and you can agree on this not only in the bar, but simply by meeting stalkers in the middle of the level. By the way, stalkers go mostly in groups of several people, and each group has a commander: only with him can we communicate and trade - a very reasonable and cunning move on the part of the developers. There are, of course, more specific methods of moving, say, spatial anomaly but this is still an exception, and the rule is that our only alternative to walking is guides. But for some quests (mostly collective), the game itself helpfully takes you to the right place and - after execution - back.

    I remember one of the USPs "Call of Pripyat" hand-crafted quests were supposed to be, and in a recent preview we mentioned that "fun" is critical to the game's success. To some, this fact will seem incredible, but GSC really made a huge step towards the players. First, many quests are non-linear. For example, you can help the bandits kill stalkers and share the swag, or you can tell the stalkers about the ambush and shoot the bandits in the back. Secondly, in the "Statistics" tab of the game PDA, you can see your "Achievements": they are awarded for completing some key (moreover, non-plot) tasks, often consisting of a chain of quests. Thirdly, in some quests, in one way or another, they play on the feelings of the player: for example, one stalker convincingly leads you to an artifact, and the other takes your merits for himself. Naturally, you will restore justice, and there will be a lot of blood. Fourth, there are related quests, and some evidence of these connections does not make them less interesting. Fifth, in GSC did a good job on the stories - there was even a place for vampirism. Sixth, we did not forget about humor this time: after a "walk" on all fours past a flock of sleeping bloodsuckers, your partner exclaims: "Well, nifiga yourself a" quiet hour "!" Of course, there are less interesting quests, but in its main they elicit an exclamation of approval from the masses.

    Another big plus of the game is the well-designed characters. Many of them were endowed with detailed appearance, and people who know quickly guess who is who ("Oh, that dude from airsoft! Ha, look, it's Yasenev, their lead programmer!"). Each has its own story and goals. Vano, a funny guy who got into trouble with bandits. Noah, a madman, a pious believer in his special destiny. Zulu, a man of principles. Cardan, a mechanic who loves to drink, in a drunken delirium recalls three comrades with whom he quarreled ... One way or another, but you will influence their fate, and they will influence yours, so the player, perhaps for the first time in the series, empathizes with the characters - why just a run through the dungeons of Pripyat: I'm sure many will try to keep their partners alive!

    Despite the title, Degtyarev is not burdened with a good weapon or protective suit, so an easy life is not foreseen at first. The signature pistol and the AK-47 are not the strongest arguments near the center of the Zone. However, with the proper skill, you will probably be able to save money on new weapons for a long time, besides, the curious player will find many interesting things in the caches. And there are fewer animals in the Zone ...

    ... which is, of course, the main distinctive feature "Call of Pripyat"... The faction war idea used in « Clear sky» , was interesting, but did not fully fit into the original concept of the Zone. V "Call of Pripyat" returns inherent "To the shadows of Chernobyl" a feeling of frightening emptiness, a feeling that a person is just an uninvited guest, and not the ruler of this world, only now this feeling is deeper. Yes, stalkers are sitting in a bar, going in search of artifacts and clearing territories, but do not expect that they will come across to you after five meters. Each meeting with a group of stalkers is a little joy: after all, they can take you to the right place, help with fire, or buy an artifact from you. Why, even if these stalkers are aggressive: it's still better than stumbling upon mutants.

    By the way, a regiment of mutants has arrived. A chimera, with which a whole storyline is connected, and a byurer, who flashed in the gameplay cutscenes, were added to the "ordinary" creatures of the Zone - both mutants are quite strong. We fixed the behavior of other monsters: now they have their own "schedule of the day", which determines when they are awake and when they are sleeping. As before, jerboas and dogs take in numbers, controllers and bloodsuckers - with skills, although there is always a chance to stumble upon a couple of bloodsuckers - here you have to sweat. Usually the creatures are heard from afar, but most of them are quite cunning and try to attack from behind. Sometimes you can observe how mutants attack each other - a rather funny sight, which is better not to go into.

    However, the main character in "Call of Pripyat" there was a serious argument in the form of the Chipper, a new weapon that is a very powerful shotgun. Even despite a small magazine (12 rounds) and a long reload time, it significantly affects the balance of power, especially in conjunction with any rapid-fire weapon - especially now that we are allowed to put an assault rifle in place of a pistol and thus quickly switch between a shotgun and an assault rifle ... Considering that there is quite quick way to get hold of the Bump stop almost immediately after appearing on Jupiter, you can flatter the developers a little for the balance. As before, weapons are allowed to be repaired and modified, but fans of various modifications will have to sweat a little in search of the tools the mechanics need. Toward the end of the game, the Gauss cannon, familiar to us from the previous parts, will also appear. As for the protective suits, the most significant change was the separation of the vest and the helmet (however, there are also "complete" copies). I recommend that you take a suit with a night vision device as soon as possible, otherwise at night you will see no further than your nose. In addition to the usual ways to get weapons and armor (purchase, stashes, kill-pick up) in "Call of Pripyat" it is possible to order the necessary equipment from a stalker with the callsign ... Nimble. Yes, yes, exactly the one we saved in "Shadows of Chernobyl" and who told us about the capabilities of our PDA in "Clear sky".

    As for the rest, there are minor changes: you need to eat periodically, you can sleep to pass the time, medicines, first-aid kits, etc. are now "attached" to the function keys. In multiplayer - added new maps, introduced a rating system ...

    In the end, you will be given a choice: leave the Zone or stay. The first option will take us straight to the final video. V "Call of Pripyat" the ending directly depends on the actions of the player. With a beautiful final musical theme, we will - again, in pictures stylized as old photos - will be told the further fate of the characters who played their role in our history, and will show how the quests we have completed and not completed have changed the world of the Zone. If you decide to stay, you can go through important quests and, after talking with the guide, "leave the Zone" - in this case, you will see an alternative version of events.

    As for the graphic component, it is no longer as impressive as it used to be, but it still looks very dignified, especially on a sunny day. There are, of course, ugly textures and the animation is lame at times, but in general, the game is visually quite attractive. On the test computer in DX10 mode with maximum settings and a resolution of 1024 * 768, the game ran smoothly, without slowdowns. In DX11 mode, thanks to texture tesilation and correct shadows, the picture looks even more realistic, moreover, the performance relative to the tenth render on test machines did not drop.

    Flaws? They are here

    As one of the characters says: "Our" Skadovsk "is always in place, will not float away." Likewise, the shortcomings in "Stalker" - wander from game to game. These include clumsy animation, annoying phrases and, at times, the hopeless stupidity of AI. Corridor levels look better than before, but still worse than the "open" part of the game. There is also the traditional for the series "I'm lost", with running the same corridors of buildings in search of a key point or exit. It is also worth noting the not always well-chosen voices of key characters, especially the main character. Well, we are so used to all this that we hardly pay attention.

    And the biggest drawback of the game is unique precisely for "Call of Pripyat" and is directly related to its main advantages. Big levels, fewer stalkers and monsters living according to the laws of A-Life ... And you sometimes run carelessly to the other end of the location and feel that life in the Zone is passing you by - these endless expanses where you will not meet either a stalker or monster, nobody and nothing. Perhaps it was worth adding anomalies, because at such moments you start to be frankly bored, and there is not always an opportunity and desire to use the services of guides. And where, then, the notorious "there are no direct paths in the Zone," if "straight" is almost always the shortest path?

    Of course, the question of stability, which is of interest to many, cannot be ignored. Honestly, I can tell you that the game is significantly more stable than the previous two parts. For all the time it did not fly out a single time and only hung once (during the save, and the save was working). Accordingly, the costs of testing the game paid off. Well, I can't be the only one so lucky ?!

    Despite the skepticism of many about the project, "Call of Pripyat" succeeded. Let the developers have something to work on, it is already clear that the "RFP" will not need many patches to work correctly on all systems, and the game itself has something to offer even the most sophisticated player. Given the colossal pressure from the gaming community, the tight development timeline and the quality of the final product, it is quite possible that "Call of Pripyat" has become an important game not only for the series, but also for the company itself.

    For three and a half years, we saw three different faces of the Zone, each of which was another step towards the creation of the Game of Dreams, which has been raving for many years.     The version of the game is updated to 1.6.00, and the main character is a soldier sent from Kiev to find out the reasons for the fall of several helicopters, the order of which was the reconnaissance of Pripyat after the incident with the massacre between Strelko and the O-Consciousness group.

    The plot, according to the logic, should be extremely simple: get a couple of pieces of paper, inspect the helicopters and the trick is in the bag. But, as is customary for GSC Game World, the task of making life difficult for gamers was successful. If before you suffered with endless bugs at every step of the game, now you have a new problem - the utmost confusion of tasks.

    The stage called "Jump into anomaly" turned out to be the most unfinished one. The arrow of your direction of movement is pointed directly, and the objective of the mission is on the right, thanks to which every 100 meters after jumping into the anomaly, you have an increasingly annoying line with the name of the same mission.

    The next flaw is related to the perpetual waste of money. If earlier you could easily get to the transition to another location, now such transitions simply do not exist. But there are guides who can transfer you back and forth for a considerable fee. Until you find a map with a short road from Zaton to Jupiter, you will always be charged a lot of money. I was unable to complete a bunch of off-story missions just in order to save money for these transitions, as well as to buy a costume for one of the main missions. I solved the problem simply - I hacked the game through ArtMoney. I think the rating of this program will increase dramatically after purchasing a new part of STALKER.

    I also noticed the lack of ammunition for Vintorez in large quantities, but in the previous parts everything was completely different. First you had to find a shotgun, then a Kalashnikov assault rifle, and only then Vintorez, Val and other rifles. Now there is no clearly arranged system for such an improvement in weapons, and the modernization of technicians has become more problematic. The second and third level of enhancements will only be unlocked after finding tools for fine, rough work and calibration.

    The stupidity of the lack of bandages and first-aid kits has been improved: in each corpse you will find a first-aid kit, a bandage, some edible things, sometimes you will come across vodka, a pistol, cartridges, and it is also possible that you find several weapons at once (usually AK and a shotgun).

    When loading a saved game and moving to another location on the loading screen, the developers added the "100 Tips for Survival in the Zone" panel. I still cannot understand how turning on the flashlight by means of the letter "A" will help "survive". I almost never turn it off for a minute due to the darker atmosphere of the game compared to other parts. A lot of stupid advice can be found in such an informer.

    At the expense of the atmosphere: new stories of stalkers have been added, which smell more of degradation of intelligence in radiation areas than worthy of humor. But on the other hand, the avid amateur will be pleased with the new abundance of monsters, zombies and a bunch of anomalies with worthless artifacts, suitable only for sale for very good money.

    With all due respect to the developers, I leave the details of the game at the same level as they are in reality. The slogan "One was corrected, the other was spoiled" is preserved here as well. Maybe the second part will allow us to enjoy a more pleasant atmosphere, a thoughtful plot and a lot of unforgettable moments. But the toy has rightfully earned the award of a nostalgic miracle.

    However, it is not the plot that plays on the atmosphere here, but the unique autumn surroundings, skillfully covering the old outdated graphic wrapper. However, very small locations do not allow you to enjoy the local beauties enough - you can run from one end of the map to the other in just a few minutes. But wandering around them became more interesting thanks to the careful study and detailing of virtual spaces.


    On the way, the hero is entertained by all sorts of creatures, as well as local stalkers, who, it seems, wander here not idle, but for some purpose. In general, the characters have noticeably increased their charisma and do not look like lazy "bots" anymore. The updated map also plays into the hands, it has become more convenient to navigate by it. The developers also threw out the stupid faction war that took place in.

    In Call of Pripyat they did it differently. Now gamers have access to 3 locations that are completely open for exploration. Each territory will open as you progress through the story quests. That is, if you go over the plot, you can go through the whole game in 3-4 hours and finish there, but if you complete additional tasks, then the gameplay drags on for a day.

    Let's now take a look at each location separately.

    Backwater. Starting location. Most of the terrain is swamp with small factory complexes and huge crevices in the ground. The swamp is teeming with all sorts of mutants and bandits, it is better not to walk here at night, otherwise you can run into snork, mercenaries have chosen the complexes, and the crevices are full of anomalies and artifacts.

    If you don't like the location, you can leave it within an hour, just make a storyline and you will be given the opportunity to go to Yanov. But don't be in a hurry. Side quests in Call of Pripyat are very interesting and have their own scenarios that can be overwhelming.

    After completing additional tasks, you can meet a cannibal, destroy the lair of bloodsuckers, get a unique artifact and much more. I recommend that you carefully study the area before moving on to the next zone.

    Yanov. The second location in the game. Everything is much more interesting here. We will meet the familiar groups of Duty and Freedom. In addition to them, on the territory there is a bunker of scientists, a bandit camp and a place where the unique artifact of the Heart of the Oasis is hidden.

    Here you can join one of the groups, help scientists conduct research, save a stalker from bandits demanding debt, pull a group of mercenaries out of an unknown anomaly. Each quest has its own charismatic characters who will tell you an interesting story and help you in addition to the main storyline see a dozen other scenarios.

    Pripyat. So we got to the heart of the zone. This city is one of the best locations in all parts of the game. Explore every street, every house and compare how much the game is similar to real objects.

    After playing Stalker Call of Pripyat, you can assume that you were in Pripyat, because most of the key objects are implemented in detail in the game.     It's just that a living gaming world is not enough to win the loyalty of gamers. For a complete immersion, the gameplay must be interesting and addictive. At the same time, after dozens of hours, you shouldn't get tired of playing no matter what. To do this, GSC Game World added many other interesting features to the game in addition to side quests.

    Search for artifacts. Looking to save up for new armor or improve your radiation protection? Artifacts to help you. They can be inserted into special containers, and each artifact will give certain bonuses that enhance the player.

    If you have no problems with this, then you can sell rare items and buy new weapons or armor. The very process of searching for these rare items is already quite an exciting process that helps to significantly diversify the game.

    Equipment. Finding new clothes is another integral part of the gameplay. After all, who does not want to get an exoskeleton or a gaus gun. To do this, you will have to sweat a lot, completing additional tasks of key characters or placing an order from sellers.

    Once you get the equipment you want, you will need to improve it, for this you will have to look for boxes with tools that are scattered in all three locations of the game. In general, all this does not let you get bored during the game.

    Combat system. All of the above would have no weight in front of the main part of the game - gunfights. The zone is a dangerous and harsh place where at every step another bloodsucker or mercenary awaits you, with whom you have to cope.

    If GSC Game World did a poor job, it would be a complete failure, because this is the main part of the game, taking up 70% of the time. Fortunately, everything worked out and the shootings were done at a height.

    Your HP quickly melts and some stalker will be able to work out your character with a few accurate shots. So you have to play carefully and avoid big hassles. But when you have good gear, you can fight with a whole group.

    Search for hiding places. Unlike other parts of the series, this process is implemented here in an interesting way, and the loot in the caches is really worthwhile. In Clear Sky, you could be forced to climb into the lair of the wild boars for a backpack with one first aid kit. In Call of Pripyat, all caches store a large number of different things, from first-aid kits to unique weapons.

    Searching for caches is not easy, because first you need to buy information or find it in the corpses of enemies. But even if you know the exact location, you may not be able to get to it. I used to sit for hours and think how to get on this fucking roof.

    Game world alive, in it you can always just listen to songs with a guitar near the fire or farm yourself new gear. Do whatever your heart desires, Stalker Call of Pripyat, you are not limited in anything.

    Player support

    If you still hesitate to play the game or not, for example, because of old graphics or poor detail, or maybe you are confused by a dull plot or outdated interface, you should not worry about it. The game is so popular with gamers that even after 9 years, modifications are regularly released on it that improve the graphics dozens of times, updating the interface, adding new weapons, locations and tasks.

    So if you are afraid to play an old game, just update it with mods, one of which is Misery. It will significantly improve the picture, change the interface and completely change the game.
