The M4A Audio file format

The abbreviation "M4A" is an abbreviation for MPEG-4 Part 14. This format was created by Apple in 2004 based on the QuickTime File Format. The iTunes online store allows you to download exactly these files (15 billion downloads worldwide). The format is a digital media container used to store audio components. Despite this, it is also capable of storing other data (such as images). MPEG-4 Part 14 files can be saved with either the M4A extension or the MP4 extension (the main difference is that MP4 files are capable of storing video). Like most other audio file formats, there is a lossy compression option - using the FFC codec. But unlike other audio file formats, lossless compression is also possible, which can be done using the Apple Lossless format.

Technical details of M4A files
