Polotsk State University (PSU)- higher educational institution in the Republic of Belarus. The Faculty of History and Philology and the Faculty of Information Technologies of PSU are located in Polotsk, all others are in Novopolotsk.Higher education in Polotsk has a long tradition. In 1581, a Jesuit college was founded in Polotsk. On January 12, 1812, by decree of the Russian Emperor Alexander I, the Collegium was transformed into the Polotsk Jesuit Academy with the rights of a university. The Academy operated from 1812 to 1820 and was the first higher educational institution in the Belarusian lands.
On July 14, 1968, the Novopolotsk branch of the Belarusian Polytechnic Institute was created. On February 10, 1969, it was decided to transfer the Novopolotsk branch of the BPI to the Belarusian Technological Institute. On January 1, 1974, it was reorganized into the Novopolotsk Polytechnic Institute named after the Lenin Communist Youth Union of Belarus. On September 14, 1993, Novopolotsk Polytechnic Institute was renamed Polotsk State University.
Since 2005, studies at the Faculty of History and Philology of PSU have been taking place within the walls of the former Jesuit college.
As of July 1, 2013, Polotsk State University unites 11 faculties, 39 departments, master's programs, postgraduate studies, and an institute for advanced training and retraining of executives and specialists. At the university, 15,200 full-time and part-time students studied in 46 specialties of technical, financial-economic, humanitarian and pedagogical profiles for the 2012-2013 academic year. In 2011-2012, 185 foreign citizens studied at PSU.
The educational process and scientific activities are carried out by 500 teachers, of whom 17 are doctors and 145 candidates of science.
The university has 75 multimedia auditoriums, more than 30 computer classes (more than 500 seats).
The volume of research work for 2008 amounted to 7644.27 million rubles. In 2008, university scientists received 26 patents for inventions and utility models. The developments of university scientists are patented in Belarus, Russia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Belgium, Austria, the Netherlands, the USA, Canada, Japan, and China. In 2008, scientists from Polotsk State University published more than 600 works, 8 monographs, 8 collections of conferences, 7 issues of the collection “Proceedings of Young Specialists”. In 2008, the university participated in 22 exhibitions, was awarded 3 medals and 17 diplomas, university employees defended 1 dissertation for the scientific degree of Doctor of Science, 9 dissertations for the scientific degree of Candidate of Science.
Polotsk State University publishes the “Bulletin of Polotsk State University”. The publication is included in the “List of scientific publications of the Republic of Belarus for publishing the results of dissertation research.”
The university has created and operates the People's Student Theater "Art", the KVN national team, the intellectual games club "Rubon", the solo singing studio "Mood", the student video studio "Conspect", and a modern dance group. The student newsletter “Wide Open” is published. Tourist services are provided by the Tourism Department of the Educational Institution "PSU".
Every year in May the solemn ceremony of presenting the special prize “Krynitsa Vedau” is held, dedicated to University Day.

Polotsk is the oldest center of statehood, education, culture and spirituality of our country. The names of outstanding educators - Euphrosyne of Polotsk, Francis Skaryna and Simeon of Polotsk - are associated with this city. This is also where university education takes its origins on the modern territory of Belarus: in 1581 the Polotsk Jesuit College was founded, which was transformed two centuries later into the Polotsk Academy with the rights of a university. In 2005 In the city of Polotsk, after the reconstruction of the complex of buildings of the former Polotsk Jesuit College (Academy), new educational buildings were opened. Now the Faculty of History and Philology, the Faculty of Information Technology and the specialty “Tourism and Hospitality” of the Sports and Pedagogical Faculty are located here.
The training of specialists, master's students, and candidates of sciences is carried out within its walls by 16 doctors of sciences, professors and more than 150 candidates of sciences and associate professors.
The university includes 12 faculties. Today, more than 14 thousand students, undergraduates and graduate students are studying in 45 specialties.
The science
University scientists have created and patented more than 1,000 inventions, utility models and industrial designs. The university's developments are patented in Belarus, Russia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Belgium, Austria, the Netherlands, the USA, Canada, Japan, and China. The university publishes the scientific and technical journal “Bulletin of Polotsk State University” included in the List of the Higher Attestation Commission.
Based on the results of student research work, our university has been among the leaders among the leading universities of the Republic of Belarus for the last 10 years. About 80% of student scientific works submitted annually to the Republican competition are awarded in various categories. The authors of the best student scientific works, marked with the highest category, are awarded the title of Laureate and awarded a diploma from the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus.
International activity
The international activities of the university are one of the priority ways for the development of the university. Academic exchanges of students and university staff are carried out within the framework of bilateral cooperation agreements with 32 foreign universities, as well as through cooperation of the university with such international organizations as the European Commission, the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD, the Goethe Institute (Germany), and the Swedish Institute. About 300 foreign students from 12 countries study at Polotsk State University, and a DAAD lecturer works.
Equipment for the educational process
Every year the university equips the educational process with technical teaching aids. To date, more than 70 multimedia lecture halls, 30 computer and language labs have been put into operation. The meeting room is equipped with modern equipment for video conferencing in high definition format. To organize independent work for students, Wi-Fi Internet access points are located in educational buildings and dormitories.
Leisure and sports
The university has created all the conditions so that students can fill their free time from study as much as possible and meaningfully, find use for their creative abilities, broaden their horizons and sphere of communication, and make new friends. The student self-government system includes the student center and primary organizations of student trade unions and the Belarusian Republican Youth Union. The main goal of the student activists’ activities is the implementation of youth initiatives, increasing social activity and useful activities for the benefit of the university and students, developing leadership qualities and organizing meaningful leisure time. Solo, choreographic and theater groups, the intellectual games club and KVN are deservedly popular at the university.
The university is actively working to involve students in systematic physical education and sports. Students have at their disposal modern sports and gyms, and aerobics rooms.

Story
It is generally accepted that Polotsk State University is the heir to the traditions of the oldest higher educational institution in Belarus - the Jesuit College, founded in 1581. At the beginning of the 19th century, Alexander the First ordered to transform it into an academy. It was endowed with the rights enjoyed by the universities of the Russian Empire, and the first literary and scientific journal Miesięcznik Połocki was published there on the territory of the modern Republic of Belarus. In addition, this educational institution had a rich library containing more than 50,000 volumes, as well as a museum, an astronomical hall, a chemical laboratory, physical, mineralogical and mechanical rooms. It is also known that at the Polotsk Academy there was a boarding school where gifted but low-income students lived and studied.
Faculties
Every year the number of people wishing to enter Polotsk State University is growing. The faculties of this university offer training in 46 specialties. They are divided by profile: financial and economic, technical, pedagogical and humanitarian. The faculties of information technology and history and philology are based in the city of Polotsk. Moreover, the latter is located in the ancient building of the Jesuit College. The remaining faculties (geodetic, civil engineering, engineering and technology, historical and philological, radio engineering, mechanical engineering and automobile transport, sports and pedagogical, pre-university training, IT, financial and economic, legal and work with foreign students) are located in Novopolotsk.
Some statistics and information about the activities of the university
Polotsk State University has 500 teachers on its staff. Of these, 145 are candidates and 17 doctors of science. The university has 75 multimedia and more than 3 dozen computer classrooms, which can simultaneously accommodate 500 students.
PSU publishes the scientific “Vestnik”, which is included in the list of scientific publications in Belarus intended for publishing the results of research done in the process of writing dissertations.
Polotsk State University, being a continuator of the traditions of the Jesuit Academy, founded the Museum of Science and Education of Polotsk, where you can get acquainted with exhibits dedicated to people who have done a lot for the development of higher education in Belarus.
Scientific activity
Polotsk State University strives to instill in students an interest in independent research activities. They can present their work at a conference, the results of which are published in the collection “Proceedings of Young PSU Specialists.”
In addition, the university has 9 scientific schools. Their research finds practical application in many sectors of the economy of the Republic of Belarus. Of particular interest are developments in the field of IT and information security.
Polotsk College of the Vitebsk State University
Before the October Revolution, a Teachers' Seminary operated in the city. In the summer of 1919, it was transformed into permanent 3-year pedagogical courses, and then into a people's technical school with a 4-year term of study. After 17 years, the educational institution received the status of a school, which was subsequently named after Francysk Skaryna.
After Belarus gained independence, it was reorganized into a pedagogical college, and in 2005 it became part of VSU.
Dormitory
A large number of nonresident students study at the Polotsk State University. Moreover, according to data for the 2012-2013 academic year, 185 citizens of foreign countries studied there.
To accommodate them, the university operates several dormitories:
No. 1. Located at the address: Novopolotsk, Yubileinaya street, 11. Designed for accommodation of students of geodetic, mechanical engineering, civil engineering faculties and foreign students.
No. 2. Address: Novopolotsk city, st. Molodezhnaya, 49 b. There are gyms, exercise rooms and a buffet. Students from the mechanical engineering, financial and economic, civil engineering, sports and pedagogical, law and engineering and technology faculties live here.
No. 3. Located in Novopolotsk (Yubileinaya St., 5). Intended for students at the Faculty of Civil Engineering.
No. 4. Located in Novopolotsk on Komsomolskaya Street (building 18). Students studying at the faculties of finance, economics, radio engineering, civil engineering and law live here.
No. 5 Address: Novopolotsk, Blokhina street, building 17. Designed for accommodation of students of the financial-economic, historical-philological, law and information technology departments.
No. 6. This is the only PSU dormitory located in the city of Polotsk. Address: st. Sverdlova, 21. Students studying in the former building of the Jesuit Academy and the Faculty of Information Technology live.
How to get there
To get to the buildings located in the city of Novopolotsk, from the railway and bus stations, you should take buses No. 5, 10 and get to the Molodezhnaya stop. As already mentioned, two faculties of the university are located in Polotsk. They can be reached by buses No. 2, 4, 1, 26 and 27, going to the Gorispolkom stop from the city bus station.
